HER LOSS: The Review

It is now December 7th, over a full month since November 4th, and I still have not stopped bumping Her Loss. I haven’t even been able to transition to Christmas music yet, and I LOVE CHRISTMAS MUSIC! I haven’t even bumped the Metro Boomin album yet (I heard its fire and I will) but for now Her Loss is staying on REPEAT! I got my apple music replay back for the year (way better than spotify wrapped wtf is that shit) and this was my most listened to album of the year. I already played it over 215 times in a month! In the words of my brother Aubrey “Running up the numbers like Ayesha’s hitta.” (Just realized that line is about Steph Curry.) But with 4 weeks of nonstop listening, it is now the perfect time to give the greatest album review you’ve ever seen.

ALBUM OF THE YEAR

It took 11 months but we got the album of the year. There is no other project that is coming close this year, not even Drakes other project but, Honestly Nevermind (ha get it?) I can confidently say there are no skips on this album! NOT ONE! Sixteen (16) tracks and they all getting bumped. Let me tell y’all something, Drake asked 21 to do something for him, and he did it. He contributed to the best album of the year. This is the performance Drake and 21 put up on this album.

1-4

Talk about an intro! Songs 1-4 are Rich Flex, Major Distribution, On BS, and BackOutsideBoyz! What a top of the line up! Crack of the Bat! None of these songs getting on base because they all hitting home runs! We start off in Rich Flex with Drake asking 21 to do something for him and honestly the melody in the way he says it just makes me want to move my body. (pause)

Side not every video that was made to that sound has been hilarious, and honestly that’s how I be wanting to move my body. Then we get the switch up halfway through the song and Drizzy snaps. Tempo picks up, beat gets faster. He turns a nursery rhyme into a modern rap about chrome! Legendary! We starting off hot!

Major Distribution up next and it’s another banger. For like two (2) weeks all I kept saying was “In this mansion I’m Macaulay Culkin. Paid in full, I’m Makhi Phifer.” What a bar, the whole song is filled with bars. 21 has one of his coldest lines of the entire album in this song “Wiggin hitta’s like I played at Kansas! (I will be replacing the “n word” with hitta’s. I need to think of the children so we’ll keep it clean.) But wow what a bar! Andrew Wiggins was nice as fuck at Kansas. That’s history right there.

On BS is so fire. One of my favorite songs on the album. When I ranked their early songs together, I discussed how at times it’s like Drake and 21 Savage play hot potato with the microphone. They don’t do one verse and then the other, they just go bar for bar with one another and it is so fire. The beat in this song gets things going early. 21 starts the song off on fire, and it takes off from there. Me and 21 are alike, he said “all his b*tches Spanish, Boricua.” He’s just like me! The part where 21 goes “I jump on your song and you sound like you the feature” to which Drake follows “I jump on your song and make a label think they need ya.” ICONIC! ICONIC! Song is fire, and I still be yelling “my lawyer like OBJECTIONNNNNN.”

In the cleanup spot we have BackoutsideBoyz, and buddy does it clean up. Drake says “Who’s the President I never voted once, If I did, I would vote Teanna Trump.” Now I’m sure we all know who Teanna Trump is, if you don’t make sure you’re not at work when you look her up. Personally, I’ve never been a big fan of her work, but that’s just me. Still the bar is super fire. I repeatedly have yelled out for a month “I’m an owl but I’ll never tell ya WHO.” That’s just great use of the English language right there. True clean-up hitter right there.

6-13

Now with a start to the lineup like that you would assume that’s the better part of the album. WRONG! 6-13 could be the entire album and it would still be album of the year. The run that Drizzy and Savage went on over these 8 songs is nothing short of the Bulls run from 90-93/96-98. Nothing short of Bron’s 8 finals appearances in a row. Nothing short of Brady’s 7 super bowl victories. NOTHING SHORT OF GREATNESS!

Spin Bout U, (song 6) absolutely fire! An anthem! A song every significant other has been saying to their partner. Just an absolute vibe. We then get into song seven (7) Hours In Silence, THE BEST SONG ON THE ALBUM! It took me almost a month to figure out the best song, and after a lot of thorough listens it is easily Hours in Silence. It is almost seven (7) minutes of heaven. Another song that just makes me want to move my body. You all know the part to.  “Turn my b*tch up. Turn my b*tch up…”

This not even the best part of the song! There’s still another three (3) minutes of Drake in his big. “You were lost until me.” “It’s my fault.” “All weapons drawn against me gotta jam.” The man keeps it… CLEAN! This song is incredible. 1 seed. Top dog. Top of the mountain. It does not get better than this.

I started calling my homies Treacherous Twins after, the eighth (8th) song on the album. I am a big fan of this song we get back to the fast pace, and 21 Savage has one of his best lines of the album “I don’t show ID at clubs cus they know that I’m 21.”

THEY SAMPLED DAFT PUNK ON THE 9TH SONG CIRCO LOCO! Who is doing that?!?! Nobody. Nobody else is doing that. That’s things only a goat can do. “Hit my line you know the head was great” instead of “one more time.” A very clear upgrade if you ask me. Not to mention the beef with Kanye is still very much on? Oh, you didn’t realize? Don’t worry I already broke it down for you:

Album an instant classic. Man went loco on Circo Loco! #greenscreen #herloss #drake #rap #fyp

Follow up the Daft Punk sample with a Travis Scott feature. Pussy and Millions (song 10) is fire, I could see if you have this as your top song on the album. For the past month I have continuously yelled out “FLACO, FLACASITA!” Just an incredible song, made me realize we haven’t had a Travis album since Astroworld. I’ma need that soon, with a Drake feature, because the two of them really do not miss together!

Drake does not fuck with Broke Boys. That is what song eleven (11) is all about and it is fire. Middle of the Ocean (song 12) is a masterpiece. This is when my brother drizzy is at his best. My first time through I originally thought this was number one. The bar when he includes the Patriots, Steelers, and Ravens is absolutely ridiculous. That’s that old school rap. “Whippin the Vespa off six Tequilas, Big Benjamins like the Pittsburgh Steelers. Drake, you got it. Robert Kraft sent the jet for us, that shit was patriotic. You would think we live in Baltimore the way they ravin’ bout’ the latest product.” My keyboard smoking just from typing it up. Man, probably lit the studio on fire. UNREAL! UNHEARD OF!

Song 13 is Jumbotron Shit Poppin, and all you need to know is that shit was poppin. An absolute vibe. The 6-13 is just too good man, too good. How could the bottom half be better than the top half? I couldn’t believe it either. But these are the facts! This part of the album stays on repeat! REPEAT!

My LEAST FAVORITES

Now to be clear, just because they are my least favorites does not mean they are not good. They are good, but not every song can be a hall of fame song, every team needs some role players. The role players for this album are Privileged Rappers (song 5), (I know some people will be upset about that) More M’s (song 14), and 3AM on Glenwood (song 15). I know some people really enjoyed Privileged Rappers, but I think it’s caught in between two great songs which is maybe why I don’t care for it as much. If it came at the end of the album, I would probably love it, but for now it’s bottom teir for me.

More M’s is okay but again not a favorite. 21 does go hard on this song, but to me it’s not one of the better flowing ones of the album. It does not get skipped though I’ll tell you that.

I find it hilarious that Drake pretty much trolled us with 3AM on Glenwood. Everyone thought it was going to be another banger by him since it’s a timestamp song, and he’s not even on it. Ultimately why I have this song so low. I need the 6 God on everything!

OUTRO

The outro on this album, is better than the outro for this blog. Drake really knows how to close his albums out. There are so many good ones, and I believe this outro is up there as well. But if you don’t think so then I Guess It’s Just F**k Me (ha get it?)

So, there you have it, the album of the year in full review. A bunch of bangers, that will stay on repeat for the foreseeable future. Not many gripes since it was an amazing album. I thought we would get more 21 Savage and I would’ve liked it they hot potatoed the mic a little more, but 21 did his thing when it was his time. Drake was Drake, if you hating now you’re just going out of your way to try and be different. His work speaks for itself, he is goated! When Santa is delivering presents around the world this year, this is what he’s going to be listening to.  If Mrs. Clause isn’t down with that, then I guess it’s just Her Loss.
